I make it a practice to be informed on the daily news. How can you lead in the nonprofit sector and not have some sense of what is happening in the community and larger world? Certainly you should read your local alternative weekly and the local paper of record. But for my money, I just find the reporting in national newspapers much better. This isn’t always true of course, but the coverage of international news, federal issues, national trends, and opinion is much stronger in a Washington Post, NY Times, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Sun Times, and so on. Can’t afford a subscription…then try sharing one with a neighbor or checking out the local library. Also, many major papers give a lot of good content for free on their sites.
There is no excuse for being uninformed about what is happening around you.
